On July 21, 2022, the 2022 Automotive Hall of Fame posthumously honored Dr. Lu Guanqiu, founder of Wanxiang Group Corporation. One of China’s original entrepreneurial tycoons, Dr. Guanqiu started Wanxiang with $600 earned by selling scrap metal. He built the company from an agricultural and tractor repair shop into a global automotive supplier. Among Dr. Lu’s notable accomplishments were production of universal joints (1974), expansion into clean energy with electric vehicle manufacturing (2002), acquisition of A123 Systems (2013), and the purchase of Fisker Automotive Holdings, Inc. with subsequent transformation into Karma Automotive (2014). Dr. Lu will be remembered not only for his business acumen in both China and the United States, but also for his dedication to keep workers in their jobs. Dr. Guanqiu was a friend to GSS and his intrepid spirit will be missed.
The Automotive Hall of Fame was established in 1939 to perpetuate the accomplishments of early automotive pioneers and innovators. Today, the Automotive Hall of Fame continues that tradition by honoring and celebrating the accomplishments of innovators and leaders from all over the world who are advancing the automotive industry.
